We constantly evaluate the condition of existing steel, cast and ductile iron, and reinforced concrete water mains for our clients. The evaluations include an in-situ analysis of soil corrosivity along the pipeline alignment, the investigation into potential areas of stray current interference, close interval or cell-to-cell potential surveys, corrosion rate measurements, and laboratory analyses of soil samples. The field and laboratory data are analyzed in order to ascertain the pipeline condition and it’s anticipated remaining life, and to identify corrosion control measures that will extend the operational life of the asset.

The solutions to corrosion damage to existing water and wastewater pipelines include cathodic protection, corrosion monitoring systems, and stray current control. These methods are selected and applied based on the present condition of the pipeline, its original construction characteristics, risks associated with failures, life cycle cost analyses, and the owner's specific goals for service life.

Corrosion control is frequently applied to new, critical water and wastewater pipelines. RCC works with the pipeline design engineers in assessing the corrosivity of proposed pipeline alignments and the susceptibility of metallic pipe materials to corrosion damage. Cathodic protection and coating systems are often incorporated in new pipeline designs in order to ensure 50 to 100 year pipeline design lives in the most corrosive areas.
